Pipeline construction over waterways, such as rivers or streams, is carefully planned to prevent impacts on salmon and other marine animals. Technologies like horizontal directional drilling allow pipelines to pass under riverbeds without disturbing the water. Protective measures like fish relocation, sediment controls, and habitat restoration also protect fish ability to migrate and reproduce. Research has shown that these methods can completely avoid harms to fish.

PRGT has worked closely with Indigenous Nations to make improvements to the project. This includes re-routing parts of the pipeline to avoid sensitive crab and caribou habitats and protect their migration patterns. We continue to listen to communities along the project route to address their concerns. Wherever possible, the new routes will follow existing infrastructure to avoid land impacts. Most of the pipeline’s route, developed with input from local Nations, remains unchanged.

PRGT project recognizes the potential impacts of construction on local communities, particularly related to housing, health, and traffic. To address housing needs, the project will build temporary, secure accommodations for workers, ensuring minimal strain on local housing. On-site 24/7 medical services will be available at all worksites to support worker health and community safety. To manage increased traffic, the project is developing Traffic Management Plans in collaboration with local Nations, aiming to minimize disruptions on local roads.

The PRGT project is permitted for up to eight compressor stations along the pipeline route, but we currently plan to build and operate only one. Unlike traditional compressor stations that use natural gas and produce emissions, our goal is to electrify this station. This approach will significantly reduce emissions, aligning with our commitment to low-impact operations and supporting our broader net-zero goals. By using electricity instead of natural gas, we aim to minimize the environmental footprint of the compressor station, ensuring it fits into our plan for a more sustainable energy future.

Natural gas pipelines have a strong safety record, built on rigorous design, construction, and maintenance standards. Advanced technology, like remote monitoring systems and regular inspections, ensures safe operation. Safety measures include automatic shut-off valves and pressure control systems to quickly address issues. In rare cases of a blowout—when pressure releases suddenly—safety systems contain the release. Pipelines are buried underground, minimizing light and noise pollution during normal operations. Any light and noise would be temporary only, during construction and maintenance, and efforts are made to reduce these impacts. Overall, pipelines remain a safe and reliable method for transporting natural gas.
